Chapter 4

When it came time for lunch, I took my tray and walked to the music room. On the way, I saw April.
“Where are you going Mary?” April asked with a puzzled look on her face.
“I’m going to the music room to see Mrs. Johnson.” I told her. I didn’t wait for a reply, I just kept walking down the hallway.
I knocked on the door, and Mrs. Johnson smiled and waved me in.
“I thought you might forget.” she said getting some papers out of the drawer.
I didn’t know what to say so I just kept quiet.
She smiled and handed me some papers.
“These are the songs you need to know and the music notes.” she told me while sitting down at the piano.
“You know Marisol,”-  I cut her off.
“Mary. You can call me Mary.”
“Okay, Mary, I have always lived by one saying. Life is like music notes. Some parts of the song sound better than others, but at the end, they all make one beautiful song.”
I went in to deep thought.
“Wow… you are so right about that Mrs. Johnson.” I said.
“Miss. Laura. You can call me Miss. Laura.”
I smiled while she started playing piano. I had a feeling that Miss. Laura was going to be one of the best things that ever happened to me.
“Let’s start with local warm-ups, shall we?”
I nodded and waited for her to start it on the piano.
“Do Re Me Fa Sol La Ti Do.” I sang in an okay pitch.
“Hmmm. Try the last Do again.” Miss. Laura told me.
“Do.” I sang.
“Don’t be afraid to be loud when you sing. It’s like cheerleading. You yell but don’t scream.”
I nodded and started eating my lunch. When I swallowed, I asked her, “Should I could down here every day?”
“It’s Thursday right? Well let’s do it every Thursday and Monday. Ok?” She answered tapping the calendar.
“Ok that’s fine. Can I finish my lunch?”
“Oh of course you can, Mary! I can’t steal you lunch, you know.”
I couple minutes after I was done, the bell rang.
“Thanks.” I said. And I really meant it.

I walked in to the house and my dad was sitting at the table with his glasses on looking at a pile of papers.
“Whatcha doing daddy?” I asked him while skipping in to the room.
“Just grading papers. What got you in such a good mood Marisol?” he asked not looking up from the pieces of art.
“Oh nothing much, just got the lead part in the school play.” I said trying hard not to smile.
He looked up from his papers and grinned. “Congrats Marisol!” he said smiling that big warm smile of his that I love.
“Well, I should practice!” I said now having an excuse for leaving.
Before I started to practice, I jumped on to my bed and turned on my laptop. When the internet loaded, I started e-mailing everyone I knew about the part. When I decided I have told enough people, I glanced at the clock and it was 4:26.
I pulled my backpack up to me and started working on math. In the middle of a word problem, I heard a yelp. It sounded like Lacey’s yelp. I threw math book aside and ran towards the door from where it was coming from.
I looked out the window as it started to rain. I was only wearing a dress, but I didn’t care. I ran around but I couldn’t find her. I heard one more loud, shrill, yelp and I saw her.
My heart sank. I sprinted with all my might.
“Lacey!” I screamed with cold ters running down my cheeks.
I didn’t care it there was trafic, I ran in to the middle of the road where she was laying on her side bleeding.
I looked for something to wrap around the cut but I couldn’t find anything but a broken piece of glass.
Suddenly, not thinking, I grabbed the glass and started trying to rip off the side of my dress. When I finally got it off, I wrapped my fuzzy buddy in it and ran fast, but carefully.
I burst through the door and dad looked up shocked.
“Call 911 or something! Hurry!” I screamed.
He jumped up to the phone and called the ASPCA.
“they should be here soon Marisol, just wait.”
I couldn’t wait. I was on the floor holding her when it happened.
“It’s too late.” I whispered.  The words repeated in my head for hours. It’s too late. It’s too late.

A Prophet (Sony Pictures Classics) -- The French know a thing or two about prisons and gangster films. "The Prophet," from director Jacques Audiard,30 Rock Seasons 1-5 DVD Box Set, brings to mind "The Godfather,United States of Tara Seasons 1-2 DVD Box Set," "Papillon" and "The Yakuza Papers." The winner of the grand prix at Cannes in 2009, the film follows a young blank Frenchman of Arabic descent as he rises up through a hellish prison society to become a crime lord. Sorry, but I'm not sure what you're talking about.
