Cult of Vamps 4

Well, the story's about halfway done. Let's see what happens (I'm not sure myself).

----------------------------------------------------------------

"Curious," Jeff pondered. "Looks like only the torches on the left side are lit. That seems like the path to follow."

"Left door it is." I clung to Jeff's arm like a leech. I never did well with anything frightening, no matter how mild. We made our way to the left door. The flames flickered, and our shadows danced to their silent rhythm. The rickety wooden door we approached was illuminated dully by the torches, and was out of place in the otherwise aged grand castle.

Jeff opened the door without hesitation, and the eerie creaking on its rusted hinges cut through the silent air like a knife through butter. I half expected some groteque, like Frankenstein, to emerge from behind the door, but the other side was as quiet as our side. Jeff tugged me along before I could flip out and return to the castle entrance.

The hallway we entered was short, and ended to reveal a stone stairway leading downwards. I could hear muffled noise coming from below. Disturbed, I stepped back, but Jeff held fast to my arm and moved forward as if in a trance. His eyes even looked  a little glazed, or perhaps it was a trick of the light.

"Jeff, I want to go back," I hissed between clenched teeth. "I can't handle this anymore. Please." Jeff kept descending the stairs, seeming not to hear me. "Jeff!"

A door, slightly ajar, opened slowly as we went closer, all on its own. The muffled noise turned into unified chanting. Another voice joined the droning choir of voices, softly at first, then with as much strength as the others. It took me a moment to realize it was... Jeff?

What? I stumbled down the last few steps, confused. What had happened to Jeff? Why was he chanting? Was he... betraying me?

I mean, if he was hypnotized, then I'd have to be under the same spell-

The room we entered was large and round, and the strong smell of burning incense intruded my nose. Chanting roared in my ears, and a chill crawled down my spine. A moderate group of people- a couple dozen or so- circled some sort of object in the middle of the room. They were all clad in black hooded robes. It looked like some deranged scene from an occult horror flick.

Maybe that's what this all was- minus the movie.
