This is one of my Hypothesis. Maybe all the Uchiha couldnt sleep because they were all afraid that someone was going to kill them all someday. So they all got bloodshot eyes and after a while it became natrul to them and they called it sharingan. So they went to sleep and thats part of the reason why they all died.

Another Hypothesis is that they killed so many people on missons that the blood would splatter into thier eyes and theyd have sharingan.Tahts partly why Itachi killed his clan so that he could get enough blood in his eyes to have makenyou sharingan. (KINDA GROOSS)

Or Madara Uchiha (founder of uchiha clan) just said what the heck ill just create somme type of special eye called sharingan!
