Day 4: Wednesday – Doi Sutep

Day 4: Wednesday – Doi Sutep

Today we were going to the temple on the mountain called Doi Sutep. We hopped  onto the vans and began the drive. I was sitting next to Melanie. Annebelle was sitting in the one seater across from Mel. We played corners. We were flung across the car. It was fun and there were no injuries! On the way we had a pit stop at a forrest conservation place. We have planted some trees and went on a nature walk. Once we had done the nature walk, we had lunch. Fried rice with chicken and egg. We then went for a walk to the temple. As I finished trudging up the 309 stairs, I was told to take off my shoes. Large bells surrounded the base of the temple. There was a statue of a white elephant. As I entered the main part of the temple, the smell of incense was overwhelming. The floor tiles were baking my feet from the sun. In the middle of the temple, people were walking around a large golden pillar in the middle of the temple were buddah’s ashes were supposed to be inside. Statues of buddah were everywhere and there were troughs of holy water that people were pouring into small vases.  It was amazing. When we got back to the Prem, we all went to the pool and had a water fight.

Traps to avoid:

·         Do not show your knees, it is offensive.

Food recommendations

·         Fried rice with chicken. Yum!

Quirky Moment

·         I dropped my drink bottle and it almost rolled off a cliff and Sam Carr and Cory had to go get it. Oops!

People into history would love Doi Sutep!

Day 3: Tuesday – Leadership and Night Bazzar
Posted On 05/06/2008 04:31:16

Day 3: Tuesday – Leadership and Night Bazzar Today we were doing leadership activities. We were in groups of 6. There were four activities, each with different leaders from the group. I was the leader in the last activity, Ant Attack. We had to get from one side of a 20m gap to the other without jumping or touching the ground. We lost one team mate in the first two minutes for jumping. We then had free time and then loaded ourselves onto two minivans (which was very squishy) and headed off to the night markets to buy dinner and go shopping! When we arrived we broke off into our own little groups. Mel, Annebelle, Leticia and I went and had dinner at subway and then went shopping. The people expected us to bargain with them. There were people selling knives and other weapons in the stalls which scared us. I bought a headband, thai bag, two book marks and a bracelet. I was a fun day! Traps to Avoid: • Don’t look interested in anything, even if you are because they will pressure you into buying it or if you walk away without buying it they might stalk you.

Day 2: Monday – A very long day
Posted On 05/05/2008 04:54:41

After two good plane rides we finally arrived in Chiang Mai at 11:30am. We left the airport and were driving on the main road when I looked out the window and saw that the pathways and roads was full of people celebrating the water festival. Over the years, this festival has developed into a giant water fight! Bucket after bucket of water was thrown at the bus. The people were very friendly though. They would smile and wave at us as we were driving. So we got to the Prem after an hours drive, chose cabins, had lunch, I was dehydrated and didn’t go to the Thai culture lesson, I then joined in on the second activity where we had to build huts. We tested if they were waterproof by pouring water on them. All we had were two sticks because it fell apart so we got drenched! We then had dinner and went to bed!

Day 1: Sunday – Packing isn’t a simple job
Posted On 05/05/2008 04:53:08

I woke up with the anticipation of going to camp. After breakfast I had a not so quick shower and began the excruciating task of packing. It took what seemed like forever to pack because I had to pack everything, unpack everything to name it all and repack. It took a while to find the torches and mum realised that we didn’t have any anti itch gel so she ran off to the shops to buy some. After my dinner I went to bed because we were getting up at 4.00 am. Too early. 3 hours too early. Eventually, I fell asleep. I dreamed about what the Prem Centre would look like, and what we would do.

TRAPS TO AVOID

·         Travel lightly. Do not pack too much. Only bring the essentials like hat sunscreen, light weight clothes and lots of insect repellent.
