In the poem ,Not Swans By: Susan Ludvigson,
Has the use of personification and
Mood.
Susan seems to want to convey her feeling of angst and so she writes how she felt at
The time of her mother’s death.
She writes “ I drive towards the distant clouds and my mother’s dying”
And she writes how she saw a flock of birds flying and in that instance they sent her a message of a
Sort, showing her that it was not the end for her life, just her mother’s.

In the poem WAKE, LADY! By: Joanna Baillie,
This poem is about life, and how it can pass you by so quickly, so you must not lie idly as
The world passes you by.
Joanna infers that you should not waste your youth doing absolutely nothing .
When she says” up! Maiden fair” and also “ waste not these hours, so fresh and gay;
Leave thy soft couch, and haste away!”
She is saying exactly not to waste youth.
The literary devices used in this poem are “imagery”, like when she says “o’er flower and tree loud hums the bee, and the wild kid sports merrily.
The sun is bright, the sky is clear”.
She also uses(I think) A Metaphor that used the maiden for youth that sleeps through life.
The third literary device that she uses, it repetition.
At the beginning of each stanza she says “up! quit thy bower!”
Or “up! Maiden fair, bind thy hair”
And “up! Time will tell the morning bell”
