Do you know the story behind this image? Back in the 15th Century, there were two eldest brothers, out of the 18 children, who wanted to be painters. They lived in Nuremberg, Germany and belonged to a very poor family; hence, they couldn’t go to school at the same time. They tossed coin to determine who would go first and who would work in the mines to support the one schooling. When the other brother finished art studies, the other brother who worked so hard in the mines couldn’t even hold a brush and thus, couldn’t pursue art school as originally planned. As tribute to the brother who sacrificed so that his brother’s dream could come true, the painter-brother named Albert Dürer rendered his miner-brother’s sacrificial hands in a painting. It is a privilege to learn How to Draw Praying Hands knowing that this is a portrait of deep brotherly love.
