TUTORIAL DETAILS
Please note, this is just how -I- do things. There are millions of ways to draw and a million types of things you can make for it, and in this tutorial, I can only show you a vague way of making one one type of style. But maybe this will help you develop your own style in time.
. Step 1: First outline where you want the head with geometric shapes: namely, draw a circle with a triangle at the bottom of it. I did this for both the boy and the girl heads. Notice that the triangle at the bottom of the circle (the "chin") is longer for the boy then it is for the girl. For this step, use a light color, because it will be gone over later.
. Step 2: Draw a vertical line going down the middle of the face, and two horizontal lines just above the middle of the face. This will be the vague representation of where we want the eyes and nose to be.
. Step 3: I decided to do the guy's face first, and then repeat the process with the girl, so you can see how my techniques work. In any case, for this step, just follow the circle and the chin outline with black pencil.
Step 4: This is just me being finicky. I'm not perfect, I make mistakes, too, so here I'm just erasing parts of the face, so I can make it look smooth. Feel free to ignore this step.
Step 5: This is an extra step I added by accident. Ignore.
Step 6: I made more light vertical lines down the middle of the face, in order to plan which direction I want the nose to face. And then I drew the nose in black.
Step 7: I outlined the eyes with light pencil approximately on the second horizontal line. It's not that hard: just a circle with a line over it. Make sure that the circles are at least an eye apart from each other.
Step 8: I went over the outline. I drew the line above the circle, and then the circle, and then I added small things like a curved in line at both ends leaning in, and then I added eyebrows.
Step 9: You see those red lines? I made them just for you, to show you where to put the ear. Put them from the top of the eye to about the middle of the base of the nose. And as for the actual ear: it's kind of like a curved half-diamond.
Step 10: The neck is easy: Put it in the middle of the head. I really don't know what else I can say here.
Step 11: Now I start with the girl, and follow the same type of process. I trace the outline of the head with black pencil.
Step 12: Again I make more light lines to see in what direction I want the nose to be, and then draw it in black.
Step 13: Outline the eyes in light color again. Since it's a girl, make the circles bigger and lower on the face: this time on the first horizontal line.
Step 14: Go over it with black. Draw eyebrows. I also draw a small line above the eyelash line to symbolize the folds of skin above the eye, but you don't have to.
Step 15: As with the boy, I drew the ears for the girl (note that I drew it the same way that I drew the boy ears: from top of the eye to middle of the base of the nose), and her neck.
Step 16: Just the details. The shadow below the chin and the insides of the ear.
Last step: You see those red things? Those are to indicate where the mouth should be. Where the line in the middle of the red thing is, is where the mouth should be put. About a little above the middle of the chin and the nose.
And that's it for the basics of making an anime face!
